Jon Taylor Hollis, a resident of Foley, and son of the late John Henry Hollis and the late Lula Pearl Hollis of Foley, went to be with the Lord on July 14, 2014.

He was born July 15, 1938 in Opelika. A graduate of the Foley High School Class of ‘56, Jon and his high school sweetheart, Rena Underwood (who he later married), were the prom king and queen.

They have been married for 57 years.

He served in the United States Air Force for more than eight years as an air traffic controller.

Jon founded The Independent newspaper in Robertsdale in 1976.

One of his passions in life was golf. He loved to play it and watch it. But his greatest achievement wasn’t on a golf course. It was just a few short years ago, when he rededicated his life to Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Rena Christine Hollis of Foley; daughter, Sheryl Hollis Hembree (Jim) of Robeline, La.; son, Gregory W. Hollis (Laurie) of Magnolia Springs; son, Toby D. Hollis (Judy) of Foley; daughter, Donna Hollis Rivera (Ricky) of Foley; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, G. Wayne Hollis (Carolyne) of Foley; and two sisters, Peggy Hollis Dixon of Foley and Karen Hollis Langley (Raymond) of Foley.

Visitation will be at Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Family visitation will be from 5-6 p.m., and general public visitation will be from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services will held Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 10 a.m., at New Life In Christ Church, 102 E. Berry Ave. in Foley. A graveside service will follow at Pine Rest Cemetery.

Arrangements by Pine Rest Funeral Home, Foley.
