Fred D. Jones Sr., 88, a native of Montgomery, and a resident of Daphne, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009 at a local hospital.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and Korea retiring with the rank of major. He was also chief of Air Traffic Control at Mobile’s Bates Field until he retired in 1980. He was a member of Eastern Shore Presbyterian Church in Fairhope.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marion W. “Max” Jones; daughter, Laurie Surginer; his parents, King Howard Jones and Annie Mae Boothe Jones; sister, Doris Mears; and two brothers, Howard Jones and Allan Jones.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Frances M. Jones of Daphne; daughter, Jacqueline (John) Sheldon of Huntsville; two sons, Fred D. (Tricia) Jones Jr. and Ron (Brenda) Jackson of Daphne; nine grandchildren, John and Julie Montgomery, Ashley Grad, Jeff and John Surginer, Amy Roberson, Derrick and Vince Jackson and Michael Allen; seven great-grandchildren, Catherine Grad, John Allen Montgomery IV,   John Lewis Jackson, Mia and Will Allen, Jack and Lena Roberson; and a brother, John E. Jones of Montgomery.

Funeral services and visitation were held Monday, Dec. 14 at Eastern Shore Presbyterian Church, Fairhope. Interment with full military honors followed at Veterans Garden of Jubilee Memorial Gardens, Daphne.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Eastern Shore Presbyterian Church Building Fund, or to “Honor Flight, South Alabama,” C/O Dr. Barry Booth, Mobile Area Veterans’ Day Commission, P.O. Box 2187, Mobile, AL, 36652-2187.
