Shirley McComic Jones, 69, a native of north Louisiana and a resident of Fairhope, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, after a long battle with cancer.
She was a lifelong Christian and was an ordained deacon and an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.
For many years she taught Church School classes in the Primary Department, Vacation Bible School classes, was a member of the session, serving on several committees, and served as treasurer for Claiborne Presbyterian Church while living in New Orleans.
Upon retiring as a bookkeeper from the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 406, New Orleans in 1994, she and her husband moved to Fairhope and joined Trinity Presbyterian Church. There she served as Church School secretary, was a table parent and treasurer for the Logos Program (an after school program for children of all ages sponsored by the church).
She and her husband counted the offering and made the deposits on the first Sunday of every month for many years.
They are members of the Eastern Shore Art Center, Friends of the Fairhope Public Library, Friends of the Daphne Public Library, Fairhope First, the Nix Center and supporters of the Fairhope Theatre 98. They actively participated in the last three Fairhope mayoral campaigns. Shirley was a member since 1994 and very active in the Welcome Newcomers of the Eastern Shore. She was on the board, served as 3rd vice president, chaired the Down & Dirty Garden Club, co-chaired the Morning Bunco group, belonged to the Pairs and Spares Dinner Group and was editor of the yearbook for one year. In 1995 she and Bob joined the Baldwin Senior Travelers. Together they planned, advertised, sold and escorted approximately five trips per year for eight years. In addition Shirley put together a quarterly news letter and served the club as treasurer.
Survivors include her loving husband of 51 years, Robert (Bob) Edwin Jones; two daughters: Robin J. (Scott) Rogers of Murphy, N.C., and Dara J. (Kenny Jr.) Smith of Ocean Springs, Miss.; four grandchildren Scott K. Dorand, Sharla M. Smith, David E. Clarke and Davin M. Smith.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Fairhope. Visitation will be held immdiately following the service.
