On April 28, 2015, Joseph G. Dobbs Sr. beloved husband, adored father and doting grandfather, left those who love him for his eternal heavenly rest and to join those patiently awaiting him.
Joe was born in Berry, Ala. in 1935 and, served honorably in the United States Marine Corps before attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and graduating as an electrical engineer.
Joe married Elsie Lou Giles in 1956 and they had four children before her tragic death in 1965. Joe was blessed in finding true love a second time when he met and married Joyce Payne in 1968, and built a home in Birmingham to be near all his extended family and his work with Alabama Power Co.
As the kids grew up and out, Joe and Joyce moved to Foley where he worked at Baldwin EMC and helped bring light to many families beyond his own before retirement.
Joe was very proud of his family, friends and his service to the community, and above all, his devotion to the country through his service in the U.S. Marine Corps. Joe was proud to be a Marine and was always looking to help others.
Joe was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Foley.
Joe is survived by Joyce and his children, Joey (Amy), Johnny (Patsy), Miriam and Jimmy (Jane); as well as his beloved grandchildren, Ross (Hannah), Jacob (Jennifer), Sam and Grace. Joe’s older brother, Roy (Phyllis), is a resident of Berry, Ala. and continued the family tradition of service to the country and community that is the hallmark of the Dobbs family.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Gwendolyn; and his father, Roy.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of selfless sacrifice to his family, and will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.
Joe would be honored by a contribution to the Wounded Warrior Foundation to help those in a time of need.
