Joseph Leon Meyer Jr. born Nov. 22, 1948 in Birmingham, passed away.

He was the son of Joseph Leon Meyer and Mary Elizabeth. He spent his childhood in Montevallo.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam era.

He moved to Gulf Shores 18 years ago to pursue his love of playing golf. One of his most memorable adventures was playing at St. Andrews in Scotland. He was planning to return there again this year.

Golf was a big part of his life, beginning in high school. An even bigger part was his of his life was his deep Christian faith. His spiritual home was at First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores, where he had many precious and loving friends.

Joe had a high work ethic and worked and owned businesses in men and women’s retail and served Shaw Industries for many years. He had a special way with customers, friends and family that endeared him to all.

He is survived by his two loving children, Ginger Meyer Sanford of Tuscaloosa and Christopher Joseph Meyer of Birmingham; a grandchild, Lindy Beth Sanford; a sister, Linn Meyer, and brother-in-law, Bill Storey of Midland, Ga.; aunts, Bonnie Jean Compton, Nellie Sue Myrick and Hazel Dean Rochester; and a uncle, Jack Harman Davidson.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Memorial services will be held Monday, March 10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores.

The family requested that memorial donations be made in lieu of flowers to First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores.
