Joseph William Hack Sr., born Oct. 9, 1928, died Jan. 31, 2012. Joe was born in Perdido, to Nora Weekly Hack and Joe Hack. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eleanor Hack Dunn and Ruth Hack Nunally.
Joe grew up in Albany, Ore., and moved to Baldwin County to graduate from Baldwin County High School. He served his country as a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. He worked for Mobile Gas Company for more than 40 years and retired as manager of operations. His strong background in business operations served the city of Orange Beach when Joe was appointed to the City Council in 1997.
His accomplishments as a council member include reinforcing the management teams of the Fire and Police departments, and helping plan for the construction of the Orange Beach Recreation Center, Senior Center and Water Front Park. Joe Hack’s experience and education include several consecutive years in attendance at the Gas Measure and Control School at the University of West Virginia, the Corrosion Control and Metallurgy School at the University of Alabama and middle management school at Texas A&M University.
He served as president of the Alabama Natural Gas Association and the Booster Clubs of both Vigor and Davidson High Schools in Mobile. He was chairman of the Chickasaw Housing Authority Board for five years and a board member for 12 years.
During his tenure, the board received a $ 2.4 million federal grant to upgrade 360 public housing units in Chickasaw. Joe was a member of Chickasaw United Methodist Church and a charter member of Orange Beach United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman, billiard player and a huge fan of the Auburn Tigers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Bonnie (the former Bonnie Elizabeth Catrett of Bay Minette); a son, Joseph W. Hack Jr. of Orange Beach; a daughter, Debbye Hack Post of Orange Beach; four grandchildren, F. Chap Greene (Meredith) of Woodstock, Ga., Stephanie Post Tovar (Adam) of Royse City, Texas, S/Sgt. Joseph W. “Trey” Hack III (Nicole) of Shreveport, La. and Blake Hack of Waxachachie, Texas; great-grandchildren, Mary Kate Green, Connor Green, Cameron Green all of Woodstock, Ga., Alex and Raylee Tovar of Royse City, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life in memory of Joe Hack will be Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Mack Funeral Home Chapel, 22154 State Highway 59 in Robertsdale. The family will receive friends at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Hospital, Orange Beach United Methodist Church or any church of your choice.
