Josephine, Ala. — Jospehine Baptist Church will hold a “Pack the Pantry” fish fry on Sunday, June 29.
“Pack the Pantry” is the church’s vacation bible school outreach program. The event came about when Stacey Jeffcoat of Habitat for Humanity spoke to the congregation. She inspired VBS director Annette Eslava.
“It touched my heart,” said Eslava, who hopes other organizations and churches will follow their lead. “I asked God 'What can I do?’ because I knew I couldn't get out there with a hammer and nail.”
Instead Eslava decided to educate the youth of the church about Habitat for Humanity through the outreach project.
To kickoff the fundraising, Riley Wagner, 9, donated $50 she earned from making and selling jewelry.
The church is looking for donations, monetary and food as well as cleaning products, on Sunday to go to the August home built by Habitat for Humanity in Foley.
“A move is so expensive and our families are on such a tight budget,” said Jeffcoat. "This will give them a head start.”
The community is welcome to attend the Sunday service, which will include a presentation by the VBS youth. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m.
The fish fry will commence at noon and will last until 2 p.m. There is a six dollar charge for lunch, which will include mullet and side dishes provided by members of the church.
"Those ladies can cook,” said Carolyn Waller, fish fry coordinator.
Waller is requesting reservations so she knows how much fish to cook. To make reservations call her at 251-961-7286 or email at carowaller@hotmail.com. The Josephine Baptist Church is located at 6854 County Road 95.
