Joyce Ashley Jay Burkhardt, 79, born July 22, 1931 in Evergreen to Ella Vassar and Andrew Jay, died Monday, June 13, 2011.
She moved to this area at the age of 9 with her parents and became such an integral part of the community that many lovingly called her the “Mayor of Josephine.”
For years she cared for elderly residents which allowed them to stay in their homes. In recent years she volunteered at South Baldwin Medical Center.
She shared her talent for crochet by making cross bookmarks and other creations for friends and family. She was a longtime member and past president of the Josephine Arts and Crafts Club.
She attended the Josephine Baptist Church for many years and kept the nursery much of that time.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Frank.
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Denice (Eddie) Garner and Sheila Helen Burkhardt of Josephine; grandson, Zach Garner of Austin, Texas; two granddaughters, Asia and Ava Garner both of Josephine; many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday, June 26 at Josephine Baptist Church with Dr. Ted Mashburn officiating.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Foley Public Library.
