DAPHNE, Alabama - The 23rd annual Jubilee Festival, featuring a juried art show with more than 80 artists and craftsmen, takes place on Main Street in Olde Towne Daphne tomorrow and Sunday. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event, expects more than 30,000 people to attend. There is no admission and the festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
“We have 20 percent more artists this year and it’s going to be a beautiful weekend,” said the Eastern Shore Chamber’s Kathie Barton. “There is going to be excellent food, great barbeque, funnel cakes, lemonade – and it will be an awesome opportunity to start holiday shopping.”
Those attending will find an assortment of unique festival foods. Experienced judges will pick best of the best works in the show and artists chosen as top in their category will win part of a $4,400 cash prize. Artists are also recognized with the Art Patrons Award. Committee members and resident patrons commit to purchase selection of work from an artist of their choice, and will honor them with special ribbons.
The popular Kids Art area returns to Centennial Park again this year. It provides an opportunity for children to gain hands-on experience in learning and exploring their creative side. Activities such as fence painting, creating wooden structures, fish prints, puppet making, and more will be featured. There will also be a pool with inflatable “hamster balls.”
Musical entertainment includes guitar duo Roman Street and LA Social Club. Belly dancing exhibitions and lessons will be featured.
Borden Milk’s Elsie the Cow will also be making her first visit to the festival and will officially be presented a key to the city by Mayor Fred Small. For those who don’t want to be too far from the action on the gridiron, a widescreen TV will be located in Daphne City Council Chambers to view the games.
