Judge James Reid to review Hallie Dixon's report within 2 weeks

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Baldwin County Circuit Judge James Reid said Monday it will be at least two weeks before he can review an abbreviated study compiled by District Attorney-elect Hallie Dixon, who resigned Aug. 31 from a controversial $10,000-a-month pact with Reid to examine the handling of caseloads in other state court circuits and provide interim income.

Reid said Monday that demands from a criminal jury trial term which began last week, a sentencing guidelines seminar he attended at the state Capitol and software problems has delayed viewing of the document.

Reid said he formulated the contract to assist Dixon’s acclimation during the transition period before taking office.

He said he initiated the contract due to District Attorney Judy Newcomb’s refusal to provide an interim position for Dixon to prepare for office Jan. 16

Newcomb called the contract “a sham,” while Circuit Judge Robert Wilters said the contract was “not ethical” and “a way to give her money without doing any work.”

Newcomb said she was formulating a transition plan with Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack, chiefs of police and former District Attorney David Whetstone. She said she has not contacted Reid or other judges because they “should not involve themselves in the executive branch.”

In a resignation statement, Dixon said the contract was “unfairly described” and “created an impression of scandal through the media.”

Newcomb and Dixon were unavailable for comment.
