Gertrude Helen Kanne, 92, a native of Dent, Minn., and a resident of Foley, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010.
She graduated from the Lutheran Deaconess Nursing School in Minneapolis in 1939. She joined the Army in 1942. She was a first lieutenant combat nurse during World War II, serving in New Guinea and the Phillipines. She was the first operating room supervisor at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley from 1958 to 1965.
Survivors include a son, Paul S. Martell Sr. of Foley; sister, Eunice Kanne of Grantburg, Wis.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. with funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at Swift Presbyterian Church, Foley. Interment will follow at Swift Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Army Relief Fund.
