Kant outspends challenger 2 to 1

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The candidates in the mayoral and City Council Place 2 runoffs will be competing for the votes cast in favor of their opponents, as well as trying to turn out those registered voters who didn’t make it to the polls on Aug. 26.

Although a large turnout was predicted in this week’s city elections, 5,427 votes were cast in Tuesday’s contest for mayor, which was less than 50 percent of the 11,580 total registered voters in the city, according to unofficial results.

However, if the 10,141 “active” voters are counted in calculating the turnout, the number increases from 46 percent to 53 percent who voted Tuesday. Inactive voters are those who have not voted in recent elections, a city employee said.

Of the candidates facing each other in the mayoral runoff, Mayor Tim Kant spent more than twice as much in campaign funds than challenger Dean Mosher.

But both candidates start nearly equal with remaining campaign funds at the start of the runoff campaign period.

Kant spent $45,350 and raised $42,420 during the campaign, leaving an ending balance of $5,486, according to disclosure reports. He started the campaign with a beginning balance of $8,417.

Mosher spent $20,641 and raised $25,896 during the campaign, leaving an ending balance of $5,254.

A campaign volunteer said Mosher’s campaign incorrectly included the amounts raised and spent on the second pre-election disclosure report, resulting in recent news stories showing that Mosher raised more than he did. The error was made by including all the contributions from the first reporting period in the second report, the campaign worker said.

The following information was obtained from campaign disclsosure reports and unoffical vote totals from the Fairhope City Clerk’s office.
