Karen Kay Kinard Roy died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, after an eight-year battle with cancer.

She was born Nov. 14, 1941 the second of five daughters, to M.H. and Lois Kinard, in Lubbock, Texas.

She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and Texas Tech University, both in Lubbock, with a B.S. Degree in food and nutrition. Upon graduation from college, she was employed as a dietitian by Rice University in Houston. She later worked in food management at Hermann Hospital, Houston, and retired as Assistant Director of Food Service for Alief Independent School District, Alief, Texas.

She was a faithful member of churches in Lubbock, Houston, Boone, N.C., and Fairhope. She had a ministry of hospitality, cooking for and entertaining people in her homes in four states. Most recently she was involved in Bosom Buddies and Tough Dogs, cancer survivor support groups in Fairhope.

Evidence of her faith in Jesus Christ was obvious to everyone with whom she came in contact. During her final days her constant conversation included the goodness of God and the fact that she was ready to be with Jesus.

She was preceded in death her parents; sisters, Janet Kinard Brokenbek and Lanette Kinard Willson; and grandson, Ian Hampton Meyer.

Survivors include her husband, William J. Roy of Fairhope; three children, Beth Ann Blakely (John) Meyer of Ft. Worth, Texas, Chris T. (Geraldine) Blakely of Coconut Grove, Fla., and Brooke D. Blakely of Houston; five grandchildren, Haynes, Annika, and Greta Meyer, John Patrick and Conner Hampton Blakely; two sisters, Linda Kinard (John) Winder of College Station, Texas, and Vicki Kinard (John) Unmack of Deep Gap, N.C.; step-children, Elizabeth Roy (Joseph) Palermo of Hickory, N.C., Dr. William Roy Jr. of Mobile, Katherine Roy (Ricky) Riego of Saraland, Charles Roy, of Mobile; step-grandchildren, Victoria and Christopher Palermo, Derrick Riego, Abigail and Hunter Roy; many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 at Fairhope United Methodist Church.
