ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — For the last several years the city of Orange Beach Parks and Recreation Department has been offering half-day kayak courses.

The classes have been very popular so the department is planning another series for this summer.

All classes are held at Waterfront Park, located on Canal Road, approximately 1/2 mile east of Highway 161.

The courses focus on safety, equipment, rescue and instruction on proper stroke and maneuvering techniques.

Instructors for the courses will be Steve and Michelle Baker, both certified American Canoe Association instructors.

All kayaks, paddling equipment and life jackets are provided.

Classes are generally held the last Saturday of each summer month.

The first class will be held May 30 and applications are now being taken.

Classes are held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The course fee is $65 per person and the minimum age is 13.

Advance registration is required. To register, contact the Parks and Recreation office at 981-6039.

Applications are available at Orange Beach City Hall, Recreation Center and Aquatics Center and can also be printed from the Parks and Recreation Web site obparksandrec.com
