ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Joe Coe knows what its like to face cancer with limited resources and still come out a winner.
With that in mind the owner of the Keg Bar and Grill in Orange Beach started a fundraiser to help cancer patients two years ago. On Saturday the bar on Canal Road will have the third annual Keg Tailgate Cook Off competition.
“I am a four stage testicular cancer survivor and at the time of my diagnosis I had no insurance and no way of paying for all of the treatment that was required to save me,” Coe said. “I am extremely lucky to be cancer free 10 years later and without events like this one I would have not have been able to support a normal lifestyle during my illness.
“It is my hopes that I can give back some to the people who have helped me or people like me with this disease and this is the purpose for this benefit every year.”
The 16 slots for teams are already filled out, but patrons can come by and pay $12 to get a sample of what everybody’s cooking and raise money for a great cause.
This year’s proceeds from admission fees and raffles will go toward the PICC ultrasound machine for the cancer ward at ThomasHospital in Fairhope for cancer patients needing chemotherapy.
The top raffle prize is a four-night stay at the Grand Caribbean.
The event is from noon to 3:30 p.m. with Ryan Balthrop providing the music. Contestants are allowed to cook anything that can be prepared in the parking lot of a football stadium while tailgating.
Rules limit teams to four members, cooking starts at 8 a.m. and must be ready by noon, judging begins at 1 p.m. and teams are required to enter only one item but can enter as many as three. Judging is based on originality, taste and presentation.
Participating restaurants include the Sunset Corkroom, Tacky Jack's Cigar Bar, Our Cigar Bar, Flora-Bama Yacht Club, Gilbey's Steakhouse, Bill's on the Beach, Island Wing Company, Wild Bill's Wing Sauce Company and Hurricane Grill and Wings.
The Grand Prize is $500 and a trophy, second is #200 and a trophy and the third place will receive a plaque.
