ELBERTA, Ala. — This weekend marks the launch of the Elberta Community Kids Summer Day Camp.
The second annual event debuts with a kick off 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Miflin Baptist Church.
The kick off will be set in a family atmosphere and feature hot dogs, potato chips and drinks. It will also include such children’s activities as games and face painting.
Following the kick off, the day camp will start Jun 9. It will be held 8 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays.
“Each child will receive breakfast, lunch and a snack,” Camp Director Michael Keech said.
He explained that participants are not charged to attend the camp.
“Everything is 100 percent free,” Keech said. “The only thing we ask the parents to help with is $5 for the T-shirt.”
However, if finances are an issue, the shirts will be provided free of charge, Keech said.
The day camp is open for area children in grades K-6.
“We’re also looking for volunteers and junior counselors,” Keech said, explaining that junior counselors are in grades 7-12.
Organizers lauched the camp last year in Elberta Town Park. But Keech said the need to have indoor shelter available in case of rain made it necessary to move. Therefore, this year’s camp will be at Miflin Baptist. But Keech stresses that it’s not a church camp.
“This is a nondenominational camp,” he said.
Helping to sponsor the event are the town of Elberta, Cente3nnial Bank, Regions Bank, Elberta Ladies Auxiliary, Elberta Hardware, Shell Gas Station, Wolf Bay Funeral Home, McDonald’s on the Foley Beach Express, CPR Automotive, Chick-fil-A and Elberta Grocery.
Miflin Baptist Church is located at 24687 County Road 20 in the Miflin community of Elberta. For more information about the camp, call 251-424-7255.
