‘Kids’ Korner’ open for Daphne East shoppers

DAPHNE, Ala.— Daphne East Elementary students can get some holiday shopping in this week while playing dodge ball or shooting hoops with their classmates.

Kids Korner’, a PTA-sponsored event for students to purchase gifts for family and friends, is open until tomorrow in the school’s gymnasium.

Items on sale range from 25-cent bouncy balls to $15 gifts such as blown glass, decorative jewelry and watches, according to event organizer Rebecca Entrekin.

“Most of the items are between one and five dollars,” Entrekin said. “We always choose the lowest price bracket so the kids can come in and shop.”

Kids’ Korner is open during the students’ regularly scheduled P.E. classes, so they can shop in the gym after finishing their daily exercises.

“It’s a chance for the kids to shop for their family and friends,” she said.

About 10 adults volunteer in shifts to help students maneuver through the area and ensure the young shoppers leave with everything they’ve purchased.

“We have things for the entire family,” Entrekin said.

All proceeds go toward funding school projects such as landscaping the school property and maintaining the Promethean smart boards—interactive education tools—according to Entrekin.

“We make very little profit because it’s not necessarily one of our biggest fund raisers,” she said. “It’s really just for the kids to shop.

“A lot of parents come in and shop with their kids,” she continued. “But some don’t want them to because (the kids) want the gifts to be a surprise.”

Kids Korner’ is open to the public but visitors must sign in at the main office to gain access to the school gymnasium.
