Betty Jean Koors, 81, a native of Electric Mills , Miss., and resident of Spanish Fort, died Sunday Sept. 2, 2007 at her home.
She was brought up during the depression and therefore developed a great sense of frugality. Even though her childhood was not characterized by material wealth, she enjoyed telling her children about her simple but idyllic childhood.
Due to her sharp business acumen, she was able to raise six children in what they considered a blessed home on St. Monica Drive.
She devoted her whole life to her family and was always concerned with their welfare. She owned and operated a successful antique business in Mobile and was well known for her expertise in the knowledge of antiques.
She moved her family to Spanish Fort in 1983 and again built a new home based on plans she designed. She devoted most of her time then to the development of her homes landscape and received many awards for it.
She was an accomplished cook and was well known for her gumbo as well as coffee toffee bars. She was an avid reader and would usually read a book a day. She was well known at the Daphne Library for taking books out by the bagsful. She could not abide laziness, lying, or stealing and taught her children perseverance and the importance of hard work. She was devoted to her constant companion, her dog Lucy. She leaves behind a giant void for those who knew her and will be missed by all.
The family wishes to thank Betty's devoted physician, Dr. John McAtee, for his many years of outstanding care.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 63 years, Gerald D. Koors Sr. of Spanish Fort; three sons, Dr. John M. (Lisa) Koors of Anniston, Gerald D. Wilson of Spanish Fort and DeeDee (Tommy) Boyington of Robertsdale; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sister, Minnie Beasley of Tuscaloosa; and half-sister, Bea Gosset of Fairhope.
