May 7, 27 members of the South Alabama Senior Travelers boarded the bus and headed for New Iberia, La. They visited the Conrad Rice Mill; Konriko Company Store; Shadows on the Teche (a beautiful home built in 1834 for a plantation owner); they enjoyed dinner, gardens and home at Antique Rose Ville. On Avery Island, they explored Jungle Gardens—they evengot up close and personal with some alligators. Then, they went to the Tabasco Factory and Company Store. You would think this would be enough for one trip, but it wasn’t! They also spent one afternoon on Jefferson Island and toured the Rip Van Winkle Home and Gardens. Next was a guided tour of the Atchafalaya Swamp with wildlife and gators, followed by Cajun music and dancing. The Martin Accordion Factory was their final stop, where they were treated to a special performance by Joel Martin.
The South Alabama Senior Travelers meet the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the Foley Senior Citizens Center. For more information, contact president Diane Hutton at 251-967-4190.
