Lady Admirals "Shell" opposition on way to tournament title

MOBILE, Alabama — Bayside Academy improved to 48-2-0 for the season with a six-match sweep of the Battle of Old Shell Road tournament championship held at UMS-Wright Saturday. The No. 1-ranked 3A Lady Admirals defeated the No. 1-ranked 5A Lady Saints of St. Paul's 25-17, 25-9 in the final.

Bayside did not lose a game winning each match in two-straight games and defeated two other state-ranked opponents in the annual two-day, 24-team event hosted by St. Paul's.

"I have to say I like the way we're playing right now because of the results," said Bayside coach Ann Schilling. "But I don't like everything about it. There's always room for improvement and I believe you should keep working to get better. We still make too many unforced errors and a lot of that was from a lack of communication.

"But we seem to be limiting the damage and not letting the other team take advantage with long runs of points. I thought we played better last night and this morning, but this afternoon we seemed to be a little sluggish. And that's just one of the challenges of a tournament, you have to maintain intensity all the way, or you get jumped on.

"But we managed to keep the other teams runs down to two or three points at a time and that was big. So we're going to keep on doing what we're doing and that means continuing to work hard in practice. Maybe even a little harder."

On their way to and through the gold-medal bracket, Bayside beat No. 3-ranked Class 2A Cottage Hill 25-17, 25-17 in the quarterfinals and defeated Tenth-ranked, Class 6A Robertsdale 25-15, 25-15 in the semifinals.

St. Paul's (31-13-0) reached the final with wins of 25-14, 25-14 over Baker, 25-20, 25-17 over Class 5A No. 10 Spanish Fort, 25-15, 25-22 over Class 4A No. 8 UMS-Wright and a three-set come-back 12-25, 26-24, 15-13 victory on Class 6A No. 4 Hoover in the semifinals.

For the tournament Bayside was led by Virgina Pittman's 61 kills, nine blocks, nine aces and 25 digs; Gabby Deshotel added 49 kills, eight blocks, five aces and 32 digs; Morgan Dulaney had 35 kills, four blocks, eight aces and 31 digs; Jhalen Caffey had 29 kills, one block and six aces; Lauren Chastang had five kills, three blocks, three aces and 10 digs, setter Sydney Chandler made 146 scoring assists, six aces and had 24 digs.

Shelley Spires scored a total of 77 kills for St. Paul's and Mackensie Mosley added 107 assists for the Saints.

RHS defeated Murphy in the quarterfinals. Austin Richardson tallied 38 kills, 31 digs; Bethany Coley posted 37 kills, 44 digs; Maddie Petite added 23 kills, 19 digs and Beth Taylor had 60 assists and 28 digs for the Golden Bears.
