DAPHNE – After the first game score went 29-27, Robertsdale, everyone expected a long four or five game match but the Lady Bears went on to defeat Daphne in three 25-19, 25-17 at DHS Thursday.
RHS showed up and avenged an earlier season loss to DHS at Robertsdale which the Lady Trojans won in four.
"We've been talking about how Daphne beat us at home and I think it motivated us and they were ready to come out and play today," said RHS coach Metta Roberts.
"Kayli (Evans) and Shelia (Dailey) hit the ball well for us on the left side and Bailey (Cincotta) played good defense for us and we served the ball real well. My team has improved but we still have a long way to go and just have two weeks to get there."
Cincotta served out and scored the final two points with a winning tip and an ace in game three.
Both teams are in contention to make the playoffs and are undefeated in their areas. DHS will play host to 6A Area 4 foe McGill-Toolen Çatholic, ranked No. 5 in state 6A, Tuesday. Varsity play is set for 5:30 p.m.
Also on Tuesday, RHS will play Theodore and Spanish Fort at SFHS at 4: 30 p.m. Robertsdale is 2-0 in it's 6A three-team Area 3 league with Foley and Fairhope and will face Foley again Oct.6 at RHS in the Bears' next home appearance.
Daphne coach Kay Flarity said her team has been going through a lot of up-and-down swings in how well they play lately. They fell to No. 6 ranked Murphy last week but defeated No. 10 ranked Mary G. Montgomery Sept. 22.
"We just have a lot of work to do,"she said. "We're like team A, B or C or whoever happens to show up that day."
Evans, a sophomore led RHS with 17 kills and 15 digs, Dailey added 13 kills, Dienesha McKinney had 10 blocks, Cincotta had 16 digs and Kellen Shirley had 28 assists.
Daphne's Courtney Carter had eight kills, Deanna Vogler had five kills and Brooke Carpenter had 12 assists. The Lady Trojans are playing in the Hoover Tourney today at HHS.
