ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins held Robertsdale’s Lady Golden Bears scoreless in the first period and gave up just nine points in the first half on the way to a 37-30 win on Tuesday night.

Gulf Shores (2-1) built a 10-0 lead in the first period and a 20-9 lead by the end of the first half behind six points from Meagan Davis and four from Laura Peavy.

“At halftime we had a nice lead and came out from halftime kind of flat,” Gulf Shores assistant coach Brittany Allison, who served as head coach because of a technicality at the beginning of the game, said. “They (Robertsdale) came out and just fired, fired, fired. And we just had to catch back up and get our shots to fall and get our defense going without fouling.”

Davis fouled out in the third period, and several other Lady Dolphins were in foul trouble.

“Our big issue we had tonight was fouls and free throws,” Allison said. “We just had to pick up our game and start playing better. Everybody was in foul trouble. We just had to play smart ball. Meagan is a key player for our offense and defense so we just had to step up. Everybody had to step up, not just one person.”

Robertsdale (0-2) closed the gap in the third period, outscoring the Lady Dolphins 11-7. The Lady Bears pulled within three at 33-30 with a basket from Kellen Shirley in the fourth, but Peavy hit 4 of 6 fouls shots to close out the win for Gulf Shores.

Peavy finished with a game-high 16 points. Sheila Dailey led Robertsdale with 8 points in the loss.

Robertsdale plays at Hillcrest-Evergreen on Thursday. Gulf Shores hosts the Alabama School of Math and Science at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
