GULF SHORES – The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins jumped out to a big lead in the second half and held on at the end to beat Fairhope 38-34 on Tuesday.
Gulf Shores got a boost from junior Laura Peavy, who scored all of her 15 points in the second half.
"We are trying to find ways for her to get shots," Gulf Shores coach Rhett Tranchina said. "Sometimes she can just take over games. She is a great player, we just need to keep getting her the ball."
Gulf Shores held Fairhope to just nine first half points, including just three in the second quarter. Tranchina said Gulf Shores boys coach Dru Powell had helped coach the defense during practice.
"Coach Powell worked his butt off to help us with our press break," Tranchina said. "He really worked hard to help us out in practice, and it paid off tonight."
Along with Peavy's 15, Meagan Davis scored eight and Khadijah Jackson had seven for Gulf Shores.
Raven Priolo and Megan Dowdwy finished with 12 points each for Fairhope.
Gulf Shores will host the Coca Cola Christmas Tournament consolation and championship games this afternoon at 3 p.m. Fairhope plays in the St. Paul's Tournament today.
