GULF SHORES – The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins scored seven runs in the second inning en route to a 10-0 win over Foley on a frigid Thursday night on the Lady Lions’ home field.
Senior pitcher Kay Kay Grocholl struck out seven batters in six scoreless innings to get the win for Gulf Shores (5-4).
“Kay Kay did a good job on the mound for us,” Gulf Shores coach Karen Collins said. “We just asked her to throw strikes and get groundballs and our defense shut the door on them.”
Gulf Shores scored all seven second inning runs with two outs after a Foley error. Five runs scored after walks and errors, then Ally Dicks drove in two runs on a single to cap the Dolphins’ second inning explosion.
Gulf Shores added three runs in the top of the sixth. Courtney Brannon had an RBI single, and Kelci Stowe had a two-RBI single in the inning.
“We had the two big innings there,” Collins said. “You like to have four or five hitters you can depend on, and we are getting hits out of nine or 10.”
The Lady Dolphins have won five of their last six games after starting the season 0-3.
“They are starting to believe in it,” Collins said. “They believe in themselves.”
Gulf Shores will play in the Patriot Classic softball tournament in Tuscaloosa this weekend.
