GULF SHORES – The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins swept Foley and Madison County in a tri-match on Thursday.
Gulf Shores defeated Madison County 25-12, 25-23 and beat Foley 26-24, 25-10. Lady Dolphin head coach Wing Brett said the return of senior libero Emily Brett was a big reason his team won every set in the tri-match. Brett had been sidelined for five months with a leg injury.
“We got Emily back and she was just chomping at the bit to play,” he said. “We have a bunch of really good kids. Some kids are just special and everyone else feeds off of them and Emily is one them.”
Against Madison County Emily Brett led the team with seven digs, Erin Brett had four aces and nine assists, Kimberly Glanding had four kills and four aces and Allison Taylor had four kills.
Erin Brett had 10 assists against Foley, while Taylor and Virginia Jones had five kills each. Laura Peavy added six digs against the Lady Lions.
After falling against Gulf Shores in their first match, Foley lost to Madison County 25-23, 25-18.
Foley head coach Chad Anderson said his team played well in the first set against both Gulf Shores and Madison County, but couldn’t sustain that level of play in the second set.
“We have been a first game team all year long,” Anderson said.
Megan Haber led Foley with 10 kills, eight digs and five blocks overall. Lisa Alms added 10 kills and Hannah Younce had 22 assists. Brittney Davis, a freshman, had 10 blocks and six kills.
Gulf Shores will host the 5A Area 2 tournament on Tuesday starting at 4:30 p.m.
Foley will play Fairhope in the 6A Area 3 tournament at Robertsdale on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The winner will face Robertsdale for the area title.
The top two teams from each area tournament will advance to the state playoffs.
