SPANISH FORT, Ala. – The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins captured their third straight area championship with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 sweep against Spanish Fort on Thursday.

Gulf Shores was led by Laura Peavy, who had 23 assists and by Virginia Jones, who had 10 kills and eight digs in the win. Courtney Carter added 11 kills and Alex Hackworth had seven digs for the Lady Dolphins.

Gulf Shores trailed twice in the first game but did not relinquish the lead after pulling ahead 15-14. Game two followed a similar path, with the Lady Dolphins grabbing a 15-14 lead and running with it. Spanish Fort led for most of the third game, but the Lady Dolphins came from behind at 21-19 and scored six straight to win the game and match.

"I told them 'if you are going to be a championship team you have to play out of championship position,'" Gulf Shores coach Wing Brett said. "We got down in bad situations 6-1 or 8-2. They started finally turning things around. We had an idea of what we could do and we just weren't doing it early in the game. We changed gears and started taking care of the ball."

Prior to the match, Spanish Fort honored seniors Madison Poe, Chelsea Yarbrough and Taylor Morehouse.

Gulf Shores hosts Foley and Madison Academy for a senior night tri-match on Monday. Spanish Fort plays at St. Paul's on October 7.
