FAIRHOPE—Daphne Lady Trojans coach Rick Andrew summed up the rivalry between DHS and Fairhope as like a box of chocolates. "You never know what you're going to get when it's Daphne-Fairhope," he said after DHS defeated the Lady Pirates 2-1 in a triple-overtime section shootout Friday at Majors Field.

Elizabeth Heiss and Maria Peters each scored in the shootout for Daphne and Ryley Rockwell for Fairhope to give the Lady Trojans the 6A Section 2 victory and improve to 12-1, 5-1. The Lady Pirates ended the first meeting with DHS at 5-5-1, 4-2. Both teams have one section loss to McGill-Toolen Catholic which leads the section race.

In regulation, Alli Griffin scored for Fairhope and Chanel Elgin for Daphne. But both of the two five-minute, sudden-death overtimes went scoreless which led tot he shootout format.

"It's always a battle, " Andrew said. "Fairhope played their hearts out. Our girls played just as hard and it just comes down to that. It's a great win, but it's also a growing opportunity, a chance to learn and still get better. (The section) is still wide open."

Fairhope coach Steve Morisani said his team was prepared for a tough night. "I think we had a good idea of what Daphne wanted to do with respect to attacking our defense. In the first half, it took a little bit of an adjustment because we've played a couple of teams that play very directly like they do. And that can be difficult especially when they do it as effectively as Daphne. I felt like in the second half that we did a much better job of handling their pressure, of communicating, of attacking their goal."

Morisani added that the ability of his back four defenders to absorb the DHS offensive pressure was key, but that DHS won too many 50-50 balls. "And that led to too much defending by us. I mean those two forwards (Elgin, Peters) are pretty good and his sweeper (Brianna Heiss) did a good job. When we went forward, we had success. Their keeper (Samantha Beacham) made a huge save in the second half. At the end of the day, it's about executing and what we took from this game is that we've got to keep working on that."

The Lady Trojans host Albertville Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and play Murphy at Cottage Hill Park Friday at 6 p.m. before hosting McGill-Toolen Monday at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Pirates will host Robertsdale Friday at 5:30 p.m. , UMS-Wright Saturday at noon and Bayside Academy March 31 at 5:30 p.m.
