POINT CLEAR, Alabama — The Lady Pirates improved to 30-0 on the year with a 30-stroke win in the 6A Section 1 golf tournament at Lakewood Golf Club Monday.
Fairhope defeated McGill-Toolen Catholic 240-270 for the team title. The top four teams and unattached individuals advance to the substate round next week. Alma Bryant qualified in third with a 275 and Enterprise made the cut with a 286.
Fairhope Virginia Green won her second-straight individual Section 1 championship with a 74 and shared the medalist honor this year with Northview junior Best Phakamad. Green will be a freshman at Fairhope High in the fall. Her brother, FHS sophomore Alex Green also won back-to-back section titles in the boys tournament.
The Lady Pirates were also led by seniors Anna Grace Claunch (79) and Jasmine Wallace (87) and sophomore Sidney White who finished with an 88.
“The girls played well today,” said Fairhope coach David Stapleton. “Our goal was to shoot some where between 238 and 244, so we fell right about where I think we needed to finish for the Sectional tournament. And it was our goal to win it. The girls really felt like they were on a mission to bounce back after finishing second last year.”
The Lady Hurricanes of Alma Bryant were the 2012 winners.
“The girls have been very motivated all year,” he said. “My seniors, Anna Grace and Jasmine had great rounds, maybe the best they’ve had in a while. Of course having the medalist on your team with Virginia helps your score and Sidney is such a competitor, she’s always going to battle to shoot her best. So having those four competitors out there turning those good scores gave that big 30 stroke advantage over the next team in McGill. And McGill played well, we just played what I think is our best, or close to it today.”
Aleesha Smith led the Lady ‘Canes with a 78, Rachel Martin led the Lady Yellow Jackets with an 86, Megan Duncan led Baldwin County with a 95 and Morgan Cannon of Daphne shot a 98 as an individual.
“But certainly I believe we’re capable of going even lower,” Stapleton added. “We just stressed going into today that we need to just pull together as a team and turn in four good scores. I told them even though only the best three count, if we take advantage of our own drive to compete we’ll be okay.”
The qualifying individuals were Phakamad, Jewels Ontiveros (86) of Robertsdale, Paige Nelson (93) of Davidson, and Lacy Lucus of Bryant who will play in the sub-state tournament at Heron Lakes in Mobile Monday. The top three teams and individuals will advance to state.
