Lady Pirates golfers take team win at TimberCreek; Wood medals to lead SF

DAPHNE, Alabama—Fairhope’s Lady Pirates took a tri-match win on the road at Timber Creek Thursday to edge the SFHS girls 135-139 with Daphne finishing at 171.

Spanish Fort senior Elaine Wood fired a 36 on the Dogwood course to take the individual medal. But the Lady Pirates made up the difference for the team match win.

Virginia Green led Fairhope with a 38 while Morgan Cannon led the host team Lady Trojans with a 48 for third-place overall. Green and Wood were within a stroke of each other until the final hole.

Anna Grace Claunch, Jasmine Wallace and Sidney White rounded out the undefeated Lady Pirates' (3-0) field. Bailey Byrne and Sarah Gaston made up the rest of the runner-up Lady Toro team while Brittany Smith, Freeda Jeffords and Kaitlyn Skeen rounded out the Daphne team.

Wood, a Montevallo golf signee, is the defending Baldwin County champion. Green won the 6A Sectional title medal last spring as a seventh-grader.

Fairhope also won individual and team honors on Peninsula’s Lakes Course at Gulf Shores to open the season in cold, windy and rainy conditions. Green took individual honors with a five-over-par 41. Fairhope won team honors also with a 127-194 win over host Gulf Shores High. Wood, playing unattached shot a 43.

Also last week, Bayside Academy’s Lady Admirals won over a four-team field at Herron Lakes in Mobile under chilly and windy conditions.

Hayleigh Hughes shot a 43 to win the individual medalist honors and lead Bayside to a 142-164 win over St. Luke’s while Cottage Hill and Mobile Christian turned in team scores of 191 and 204.

Hughes’ teammate Rebecca Todd finished with a 45 for the silver and Cottage Hill's Kaitlin Thomas took third with a 51.

On Tuesday the Lady Pirates will host Spanish Fort and Bayside Academy at Quail Creek at 2:30 p.m. Also on Tuesday, Daphne will host Baldwin County High and Robertsdale at TimberCreek at 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, the Lady Pirates will host Daphne and Spanish Fort at Lakewood in Point Clear at 2:30 p.m.
