Lady Saints off to 6-4 start

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Ten games into the season, the Central Christian girls basketball team sits at 6-4 and still have sights on doing something that no other girls team has done inside the conference, winning their third straight Panhandle Christian conference championship.

“I think overall we are looking pretty good,” Saints head coach Michael Turner said. “We have set ourselves up for a strong run for the conference championship.”

In their first 10 games of the season coach Turner and the rest of the Saints have some strengths that Turner believes will help the Saints further down the road.

A fast pace transitional offense is something that Saints have used to their benefit all season long.

“We are playing extremely well up and down the court. With us playing a lot of non-conference games, I was able to have my bench get a lot of playing time in those games,” Turner said. “I have two groups I can put on the court and keep a high tempo; it’s tuff for teams to keep up with them for four quarters.”

At the same time the Saints will have to shore up some weakness if they want to make a run at not only a conference championship but for an invite to the National tournament as well.

“I think our defense is something we still need to work on. I have been stressing offense, but if you score 100 points and you let up 101 you lose,” Turner said. “I stress that to my girls. If you score a lot points you still have to work on our defensive foot work, and moving to the ball.

Through practice and hard work coach Turner believes it is something that could be turned around.

“We worked on it over Christmas break, we worked hard and I believe that is something we can still improve on,” Turner said.

Eliminating turnovers is also something Coach Turner would like to see cleaned up as well.

Ten games into the season the young Saints go into their game against West Florida on Jan. 10 averaging just over 52 points game which includes big games by key members of the team.

Senior McKenna Fountain leads the team in both overall points and points per game with 165 overall and 16 points per game.

Freshman Haley Henson has also stepped up this season by averaging just over 13 points per game. Another freshman Lauren Center leads the team in rebounds per game with seven.

With the bulk of their conference schedule coming up the Saints still have one more non-conference game, a game that the Saints have circled on their schedule.

“West Florida Baptist is one of the better teams we may see down the road in a final four when it comes to playoff time,” Turner said. “We play them tomorrow (January 10) and we will see how good we are and see if it sets the tempo for the rest of the season.”

Out of the eight remaining games the saints will play only three games in front of their home crowd at CCS.

With the season hitting the home stretch the Saints seem to set up to make another run at a final four berth.

“We just need to take care of the ball, run our offense and play great defense,” Turner said. “I don’t want to be over confident, but if we come out and do the things that I know we can do we should be alright and come out on top of our region.”

After their game against West Florida Baptist, the Saints will play back-to-back road games against East Hill Christian, and Aletheia Christian Academy before returning home to play Evangel Family Christian Academy on Jan 19.
