BAY MINETTE, Ala. Kandace Breeland and Amanda Splillers each tripled and the duo combined to drive in five runs for Faulkner State in a 6-3 win over L.B. Wallace of Andalusia in the first game of a Sunday-afternoon fastpitch softball doubleheader on the FSCC diamond. LBW won the second game 6-2 behind the five-hit pitching of Christie Soulis.

FSCC’s second twin-bill split left the Lady Sun Chiefs with a 6-7. The Lady Saints night cap win gave them a 3-2 record. LBW was originally scheduled to play in Faulkner’s mini-tournament that was rained out Friday and scrapped after several other teams dopped out.

Faulkner will play Pensa-cola Junior College at 3 p.m. Thursday in a doubleheader that was rained out last Thursday. Then the Lady Sun Chiefs will open Alabama Community College Conference South Division play Friday 1 p.m., hosting Bishop State of Mobile to close out an 18-day home stand.

Lady Sun Chiefs coach Paul Jones will take his team to Perkinston, Miss., on Saturday for a noon doubleheader against Gulf Coast CC, the first of four straight road dates for the Lady Sun Chiefs. They play PJC in a Tuesday doubleheader 3 p.m. on the Lady Pirates’ Milton, Fla. campus diamond. On March 7-8, FSCC will participate in Pearl River CC’s invitational tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Meagan Sloke doubled leading off the bottom of the second inning of Sunday’s first game and moved to third on Spillers’ sacrifice bunt, with Spillers reaching first on LBW third baseman Tabitha Jenkins’ error. Breeland’s triple to the right field gap sent both runners home.

Jenkins made up for her miscue in the third with a game-tying one-out solo home run over the left-center field fence off FSCC starting Amber Wilson, after Angela Hanna led off the inning with a drive over the right field fence.

Spillers’ two-run triple highlighted a three-run FSCC third. It drove in Terri Johnson, who drew a lead off walk, and Stephanie Beahn, who had to settle for a line drive single off the left field fence after Johnson held up to make sure the ball wasn’t caught. Breeland’s sacrifice fly to right sent Spillers home.

LBW got a run back in the fifth off FSCC reliever Nicole Sweatt on a lead off walk to Jess Reeves, Hanna’s ground out to third and Jenkins’ two-out single to center. Faulkner got the run back in the sixth when Meghan Wallace reached second as LBW center fielder Lakesha Harley dropped her fly ball and Beth Readhead delivered a two-out base hit up the middle.

Wallace also had two hits, doubling to lead off the FSCC first and singling in the second. Hannah, Jenkins and Ashton had two hits each for the Lady Saints.

Sweatt earned the pitching win with four innings of relief. She gave up three hits, struck out four and earned two.

Starter Debra Hubbs took the loss for LBW.

Soulis blanked the Lady Sun Chiefs until the sixth inning in the second game and her teammates backed her with an 11-hit attack off three Faulkner pitchers. LBW also benefited from three unearned runs via two of Faulkner’s three errors.

Jenkins, Marquita Johnson, Harley and Alison Hughes had two hits each for LBW. Jenkins and Ashton Hudson doubles and Katrina Chietzborg had a two-run pinch hit single in a five-run Lady Saints sixth. Breeland belted an RBI double and Sloke a run-scoring single in the FSCC sixth when the Lady Sun Chiefs collected three of their five hits. Wallace led off the inning with a double and scored on Breeland’s two-bagger.

Starting pitcher Jessica Morris took the loss. She allowed four hits and first-inning unearned run, struck out one and walked one. Wilson and Sweatt pitched in relief.
