BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Faulkner State ran its road South Division fastpitch softball winning streak to six games Sunday wth a 10-2, 12-4 doubleheader sweep at Alabama Southern in Monroeville, but the streak finally ended Monday afternoon in Alexander City against powerfull Central Alabama. The Lady Trojans swept FSCC 7-0 and 8-5.
Monday’s losses left third-year FSCC coach Paul Jones and his team with a 10-6 South Division record inside a 23-26 overall mark. Ironically, the Lady Sun Chiefs are 14-12 and 6-2 away from Bay Minette and 9-14 and 4-4 on their campus diamond, where they will host L.B. Wallace of Andalusia in another SD doubleheader at 1 p.m. Thursday.
The LBW twin bill will be the first of two SD doubleheaders in as many days for Faulkner. On Saturday the Lady Sun Chiefs play at Enterprise-Ozark at 1 p.m., and on Tuesday they travel eastward again for a 1 p.m. divisional double dip at L.B. Wallace that was postponed March 20.
SUNDAY
FSCC 10-12, Ala. Southern 2-4
Meaghan Wallace had five hits and drove in three runs in the sweep of the Lady Eagles, and Faulkner staged five- and four-run rallies in the first game and an eight-run explosion in the nightcap.
Wallace had a run-scoring double in FSCC’s five-run fourth inning in the first game and also singled. She had three more hits in the second game, singling home a run.
Winning pitcher Nicole Sweat went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the first game. Sweat received extra offensive support from Stephanie Beahn with two hits, Amanda Spillers’ two-run double in a four-run seventh, Meagan Sloke’s double and Kandace Breeland’s and Nicole Morris’ RBI singles.
Sweat pitched a six-hitter. She struck out four batters and walked none.
Breeland had two hits and two RBI in the second game, and Beahn had a two-run double and Nicole Morris a two-run single in FSCC’s eight-run seventh that began with the score tied 4-4.
MONDAY
Central Ala. 7-8, FSCC 0-5
The Lady Sun Chiefs managed just four hits in the first game, half of them doubles by Becky Lopez. Central Alabama, meanwhile, slugged three solo home runs, including back-to-back shots by Katie Ellis and Heather Snell to open the second inning and two by Allie Bobo, a bases-empty shot in the third inning and a two-run homer in the sixth.
Teri Johnson slugged a two-out, two-run home run in a three-run first inning in the second game for FSCC, but the Lady Sun Chiefs couldn’t maintain the lead. CACC went ahead after two-run rallies in the first and third innings and again with a run in the fifth after Faulkner tied the score in the top of the inning.
The Lady Trojans scored their last three runs in the sixth. Fauilkner could only get one of them back in its last at bat.
Sweat and Breeland had two hits each and Beahn doubled. Hillary Down and Maria Robinson had three hits each for CACC.
