BAY MINETTE, Ala. Amber Wilson made two first-inning runs stand up, pitching a five-hitter Saturday afternoon to give Faulkner State Community College 2-1 win and a fast-pitch doubleheader split with John Calhoun CC of Decatur on the FSCC field.
Calhoun was originally scheduled to have participated in Faulkner’s mini-tournament, but instead played the Saturday twin bill against the Lady Sun Chiefs after several teams pulled out of the event. The Lady War Hawks, who arrived in Bay Minette Thursday afternoon, defeated FSCC 3-1 in Saturday’s first game, which was also the season-opener for Calhoun.
The split left Faulkner with a 6-7 record.
Wilson struck out two Lady War Hawks, walked three, and she pitched out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning by throwing a called third strike past Ashley Blankenship, then throwing out Summer Adams after fielding her bouncer.
Meghan Wallace’s leadoff double in the bottom of the first started a two-run FSCC rally. She moved to third on Kandace Breeland’s bunt single and scored on Beth Readhead’s one-out base hit to left field.
Breeland, after stealing second, went to third on Readhead’s hit and scored on a fielding error by JCCC shortstop Britney Harris.
Blankenship scored the Calhoun run on Britney Chafin’s two-out single after leading off the inning with a base hit. Blankenship moved to second on Summer Adams’ sacrifice.
Britney Wagner had two of Calhoun’s hits, all of which were singles. Readhead doubled leading off the FSCC third and stayed there when Harris fielded Terri Johnson’s grounder and then threw late to first after first running. Moments later, Readhead was thrown out at the plate by Calhoun left fielder Britney Chafin attempting to score on an error by Lady War Hawks’ third baseman Elizabeth Mann.
Starter Chelsie Turn-baugh took the loss for Calhoun. She pitched three innings, gave up five hits, struck three and walked one.
Blankenship relieved and threw the last three innings, giving up one hit while striking out two.
In the first game, Calhoun broke up a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the seventh on Chafin’s one-out single, a walk to Hollye Keenum, Haley Keenum’s RBI double to the left field fence, Terry’s RBI single to center and Wagner’s sacrifice fly.
The Lady Sun Chiefs averted a shutout in their last at bat on Johnson’s leadoff double to left followed by Breeland’s single to center. A base running error by Breeland snuffed out the rally, however, after Breeland took off for second when Wagner, JCCC’s catcher, dropped a third strike to Amanda Spillers.
Breeland was thrown out at second for a double play since Spillers was out, then Ruth Godwin popped out to end the game.
Blankenship was the winning pitcher in relief. She pitched the last two innings, allowed two hits and one run with the one strikeout in the seventh. Kayla Crowson started and pitched the first five innings. She struck out one, walked one and gave up three hits.
Nicole Sweatt was the losing pitcher. She surrendered seven hits including two doubles to Haley Keenum and two singles to Terry. Sweatt struck out seven and walked two.
