BAY MINETTE, Ala. Freshman shortstop Stephanie Beahn collected four hits and first-year pitchers Nicole Sweat and Jessica Morris tossed complete games in a Tuesday fast pitch softball doubleheader sweep for Faulkner State over Alabama Community College Conference South Division foe Jefferson Davis in Brewton last week.
Beahn had two hits in each game and Sweat pitched a three-hitter in the 4-1 first-game Tuesday-afternoon win. Morris scattered seven hits in the 7-1 nightcap win, Faulkner’s fourth in a row. The sweep gave coach Paul Jones’ team closer to the .500 mark overall at 18-19 and gave the Lady Sun Chiefs a 5-1 South Division record.
In the first game, Beahn’s two-out, RBI single in the sixth drove in the final FSCC run in a two-run rally. It followed Sweatt’s lead-off base hit and Meghan Wallace’s triple. Beahn also doubled and Wallace added a single to give her two hits as well.
Sophomore third baseman Becky Lopez scored the first two Faulkner runs after drawing a walk to lead off the second inning and reaching first with two outs in the third when she was hit by a pitch.
Sweat struck out five Lady Warhawks and walked one. She gave up a two-out earned run in the sixth.
A lead-off single by Beahn started a four-run first inning in the second game. She also had an RBI double in a three-run fourth. Amber Wilson, another of Jones’ talented freshmen, had two hits including a two-run double in the first inning.
Amanda Spillers, a first-year outfielder, drove the other two first-inning runs with a single. Wallace stroked an RBI double in the fourth inning. The Lady Sun Chiefs finished with 10 hits after getting just six in the first game.
Morris struck out three batters and walked one. Jefferson Davis scored an unearned run in the third inning.
The Lady Sun Chiefs return to the field Thursday after nearly a week off and almost three weeks of games on the road when they host North Division leader G.C. Wallace-Hanceville in a 2 p.m. doubleheader .
