Lady Toros beat Navarre in Christmas tourney

SPANISH FORT, Ala. – In Spanish Fort Lady Toros' 47-32 win over Navarre on Monday, Elissa VandaWaa had 15 points while Allison Whitley added 10 for Spanish Fort. Katie Godfrey added eight points, Brianna Owens had seven, Elaine Wood had five and Jackie Smith added two to round out the Lady Toros scoring which was balanced by 16 steals (6 by Owens) and 19 rebounds (8 by Whitley).

Spanish Fort led 31-22 at the half and added to it right away as Wood nailed a three-pointer from the corner. But the Toros then had to withstand Navarre's best run of the night to pull the Raiders to within five points in the third quarter.

Lady Toros head coach Justin Moore said he was proud of how his team withstood the swing and got back into their own rhythm down the stretch.

“We came out and executed,” he said. “Really, the points that Navarre got in the second quarter were from turnovers. They pressed us in that half-court trap and that affected us a little bit. That's how they got back in the game.”

Moore said that he was also glad to see more balanced offense from his shooters.

“The last couple of games, Elissa has had basically half of our points each night so we had better contributions from everyone tonight,” he said. “The pressure that Navarre was putting on us in the half-court trap forced us to slow it down and run through our offense. We were able to find the open person then. Navarre was a good challenge for us. They had some good players.”

Moore also said he had not had a chance to see the Raiders in action before, but it was good to go into a game blindly as to what to expect from the other team and respond accordingly.

“It was a good win," he said. “Anytime you play a school from another state that you know nothing about and have no film on, you'll take a win.”

The Lady Toros were 50 percent at the free-throw line going 8-of-16 while Navarre hit only a third of their opportunities with a 3-of-9 showing for a 33 percent night at the line.
