Lady Toros take big win over Bayside; Wood passes 1,000-point mark

SPANISH FORT, Alabama — Spanish Fort senior Elaine Wood scored her 33rd point of the game to set her career high mark at 1,001 with two minutes, 27 seconds left in the third period in the Bull Market at SFHS Thursday night. Teammate Shannon Paaymans picked up the assist on the milestone basket.

Wood finished the game with 11 assists and 12 rebounds as the Lady Toros defeated visiting Bayside Academy 63-28. India James added 12 points for Spanish Fort, Paaymans and Madison Robson scored six points each and Lauren Davis had five steals for the Toros.

Virginia Pittman led Bayside with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks while Harper Morrison added eight points for the Lady Admirals.

Wood was excited to break the Special-K limit, especially at home.

“I wasn’t expecting to score enough tonight, but I’m glad it happened here,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. It’s not about one person scoring so much as it is us working together to get a win. We all want to make it to the playoffs and take it as far as we can and that means more than this. But I appreciate all the help coach (Angi) Puckett has given me and my parents and family, too. Couldn’t have done it without them.”

Wood, who is attending Montevallo on a golf scholarship next year, did not play basketball as a freshman. She scored 126 points as a sophomore and 407 last season.

Spanish Fort head coach Angi Puckett said Wood was a complete player as well as a sharp shooter who was a positive influence on the younger players.

"For Elaine to reach 1,000 in only three years of varsity play is quite an achievement. She can flat out score and has had several 30-point-plus games this season, including a 37-point game vs Foley on senior night. She is averaging over 20 points a game this year and has also had games where she has led the team in assists, rebounds, steals, and blocks. She helps us in every category.

"I am thrilled that our underclassmen were able to witness Elaine reach her 1000th point. Through watching Elaine the younger girls have gotten to see an athlete who is extremely driven. I tell my girls that success isn't just going to come to them, that they have to go get it. Elaine has worked extremely hard to get where she is and I am so proud of her accomplishments.

"(She) is ultra competitive and is more concerned with winning games then any record she could attain. She credited her teammates after reaching 1,000 for helping her get there. And it really is a team effort and something that all our players have a part in. I am impressed that she is so humble and am going to miss the leadership role she has as one of our team captains. She has made her teammates, family, our program and the Spanish Fort community very proud."
