DAPHNE–The Lady Trojans defeated area rival Baldwin County and Eastern Shore rival Fairhope Wednesday to close out the regular season schedule with a tri-match home court win.

DHS clinched the second seed spot in the 6A Area 4 tournament set for Tuesday at McGill-Toolen Catholic with a sweep of the Lady Tigers 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 to go 4-1 in area play.

In the non-area matches, Fairhope topped BCHS 26-24 and 25-14, but fell to DHS 25-20, 25-14. The Lady Pirates, 2-2, in 6A Area 3 will play Foley at Robertsdale Tuesday in that three-team area tourney hosted by the Lady Bears who went undefeated in Area 3.

Fairhope coach Jessica Webb said her team played well early Thursday but lost some intensity in the DHS match.

"We played really well in game one against Daphne, but then we made a few hitting errors and I think that was the difference in losing the first game. And then in the second game we checked out. We mentally checked out for about seven or eight points in a row and that hurt us because against a good team, you can't check out like that."

Webb added that Tuesday's first match with Foley is all or nothing in the single-elimination format. The winner will not only advance to the area final against RHS, but will also advance as Area 3 runner-up to the sub-state playoffs.

"I hope we get to see Daphne or some other team again, because that will mean that we're still playing after Tuesday so we have to win the first one or our season is over."

Daphne coach Kay Flarity said it was good to close out the final home match with a sweep, especially for her seniors.

"It was nice to get a last win in the area and being senior night, that made it nice too," she said. "It was a good day all around. We're coming off a real nice weekend with the Battle of Old Shell Road and now just look forward to having a good weekend at Gulf Shores."

Daphne, along with Spanish Fort will play in the Shrimp Fest tournament at Gulf Shores which is set to wrap up today with the finals set for 4 p.m.

On Tuesday, DHS will play BCHS again in the first match at McGill-Toolen set for 5:30 p.m. Satsuma will then face the Dirty Dozen with the preliminary winners playing for the area title. Both the champion and area runner-up will advance to the sub-state round with the area winners hosting and the runners up traveling.

Thursday, DHS was led in team totals by Deanna Vogler offensively with 16 kills and seven blocks; Cherilyn Ramsey with 10 kills, five blocks, Sierra Patterson with 17 kills; libero Krista Owens with 23 digs; Kayla Owens with 23 assists and Brooke Carpenter with 22 assists. Junior hitter Courtney Carter, sidelined mid-season with a stress-fracture is listed as day-to-day and may play for the Lady Trojans in the area tournament.
