DAPHNE — With four seconds left in overtime, G.G. Farley sent a well-timed, blind Allie-Oop pass to M.J. Armstrong who had circled behind the Fairhope defense, leapt for the backboard and then laid it in for a 33-31 home win for Daphne over the Lady Pirates.
"It's always exciting to get a last-second win," said DHS head coach Denise Grooms. "Especially like that and in overtime against a big rival like Fairhope. But you know, a win's a win and we'll take it anyway we can. We had a rough week Monday, Tuesday. We just didn't come out ready to play. But tonight the girls didn't quit and turned it back around and that's good to see. It was a whole team effort. We had everybody contribute. The play at the end was something we drew up on the sideline. We tried to run it at the end of regulation, but everybody wasn't set. After a couple more time outs, they all knew what to do. G.G. made a great pass and M.J. finished it for us."
Fairhope trailed by three 16-13 after the first quarter, but led at the half by the same margin 19-16. Defense dominated the third as DHS scored just five, but held the Pirates to two to start the fourth all even at 21-21.
Daphne went ahead early, but a Fairhope rally yielded an even 10 points to keep it tied and tack on the extra four minutes with the score at 31-31.
Fairhope head coach Jessica Webb was disappointed with both phases of her team's effort. "We didn't execute our offense and we played very poor defense," she said. "We actually executed for about two minutes. We were lucky to get into overtime as poorly as we played. About the only good thing to take away is that it's still the beginning of the season and we still have some time to work and we are going to work."
Armstrong led the floor with 17 game-high points while Fairhope's Megan Dowdy scored 15 for the Lady Pirates. DHS also had nine points from Brittany McConico, three from Amanda Patton and two each from Farley and Samantha Samry. Fairhope also had six added by Raven Priolo, four by Abby Phillips and three each by Luci Crutcher and Lauren Kelly.
The Lady Pirates, coming off a 40-24 home victory over Gulf Shores the night before for their second win of the season, will travel to Bay Minette this Friday to face Baldwin County High with varsity girls set to play at 6 p.m.
The Lady Trojans (5-3) who fell to Foley and Blount earlier in the week will travel to Robertsdale this Friday to take on the Golden Bears at RHS.
