DAPHNE—The Lady Trojans finished their 6A Area 4 race with a big 50-46 overtime win Friday at home over McGill-Toolen Catholic.
The victory secures second place for Daphne with a 4-2 area record. The Lady Trojans had lost to the Yellow Jackets earlier this season and traded wins with the third-place (3-3) Lady Tigers of Baldwin County who were swept by McGill-Toolen. The Jackets will host the 6A Area 4 tournament. Satsuma finished fourth in the Area 4 running.
"It's a big win for us," said Daphne coach Denise Grooms. "Of course I'm very proud of how we played. They played hard and that's the second big overtime win for us and that gives us a lot confidence. We still have to get ready for the tournament, but I think we made a lot of positive progress the last few games."
The Lady Trojans led 19-13 at the half and 40-31 after the third period. But the Jackets rallied late to tie it at 36-36 with two minutes remaining in regulation. Then with 59 seconds left, Yelding found G.G. Farley breaking for the basket to give DHS a 38-36 lead. But a Jacket jumper with six seconds left sent the game into overtime. McGill-Toolen trailed by two, 46-44, with 32.8 seconds left but free-throw shooting came through for DHS. Amber Yelding scored 10 of the Lady Trojans 12 overtime points to seal the win.
The Lady Trojans extended their overall record to 12-8 with the victory. Sophomore guard Amber Yelding led all with 27 points, her fourth-straight game-high, 20-point-plus contest. Sierra Patterson added nine, Amanda Patton six and M.J. Armstrong four for the Lady Trojans who travel to Foley this Friday and to Baker Monday to wrap up the regular season.
The Lady Trojans held Yellow Jacket senior Sha Sha Buchanan to eight points.
