DAPHNE, Ala. – The Trojans took a home and an area win over Fairhope High on Thursday. Daphne won 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 to improve to 3-1 in 6A Area 3 volleyball.
DHS was riding high off a big win earlier in the week over top-ranked 4A UMS-Wright.
"We got good play on Tuesday (UMS-Wright) and we've continued to play well," said Daphne coach Edoli Herrion. That was a good start to the week for sure. We are playing better and we kept that up today. We put the ball in different places. When we finish a long rally, that says something. We were struggling with finishing early in the season. (Tonight) we were serving tough, finding their holes on the court and putting the ball there. And we had some long rallies and we finished."
Fairhope took a strong lead in game two, and had a four-point lead in game three but failed to stop DHS point rallies. Keeping a lead and finishing is still a hurdle for the Pirates said Fairhope coach Jessica Webb.
"We get to critical moments in the game and we don't push through," she said. "We collapse. Games are tied and we will fight back or they will fight back and then we will kind of fall apart. We have to figure out how to push through that, to fight and get ahead and finish. We have a finishing problem. Our biggest problem is finishing. We get to the end where we have a chance and we fall apart."
Webb said that her team's blocking and hitting was off against DHS, but saw some positive play serving and covering the floor against tip shots.
"We did a much better job covering the tips tonight. We did a better job serving and didn't have as many service errors, but it wasn't a great job all around."
For Daphne Deanna Vogler had 20 kills, four blocks and four digs, Cherilyn Ramsey 14 kills and 12 digs, Kayla Owens 32 assists and Krista Owens 23 digs.
Rachel Cooper had six kills and Kali Martin five kills while Melissa Rew had five blocks for the Pirates.
