DAPHNE, Alabama — Rachael Lane and Rachel Collins combined to tally four points Friday night en-route to the Trojans getting a big 4-1 win over their rival Foley.
Lane scored two goals while Collins tallied a goal of her own along with three assists to lead the Trojans to the comfortable win.
“I subbed everyone in, everyone got to play tonight. We have a very young and explosive team,” Trojan head coach Jim Fawcett said. “We had quite a lot of chances they played very, very well. Rachel Collins had a blinder of a goal she took everyone apart and put it in the back of the net.”
Even though the Trojans led comfortably throughout the game, the first 20 minutes of the first half went in the direction of the Foley Lions who had possession of the ball for much of the early stages of the first half.
It wasn’t until the 14:45 mark of the first half when the Trojans got on the board. Collins found Lane streaking toward the net. Lane gained possession of the ball and buried it.
“Our defense has played really well all season long. Cassie Schmidt coming off a concussion came back to be our keeper tonight and if there is a better player in defense than Meghan Aubin I have yet to meet her.” Fawcett said.
Daphne answered quickly when they tied the match at 1 at the 8:23 mark of the first half.
Less than two minutes later the Trojans regained the lead on Lane’s second goal of the match giving the Trojans their second lead. Collins was again there for the assist.
After a second half that saw neither team receive many scoring chances the Trojans would blow the game wide open when another player was on the receiving end of a Collins assist.
Madison Freeman cleaned up a shot that bounced off the Lion goal keeper. Freeman gained possession and buried the ball in the back of the net.
The win was a very big step for a very young team trying to find their legs.
“Foley has a great team and they are loaded with talent.” Fawcett said. “Our team is full of ninth and tenth graders we are a very young team with only one junior. We have a lot of potential not just for next season but this one as well.”
The Trojans play again on the April 18 when they face Baldwin County. Foley plays Alma Bryant on April 16.
