DAPHNE — The Daphne LadyTrojans took the girls division of their Original Oyster House Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament Saturday with a 47-29 championship win over Navarre Beach High.
Amber Yelding was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament. The DHS sophomore guard was joined on the all-tournament team with teammates Samantha Samry and G.G. Farley as well as Foley's Megan Haber. Lacey Waters of Navarre was also named to the all-star squad.
It was the second straight year Daphne and Navarre met in the finals of the DHS tourney. "It's great to win it again," said DHS head coach Denise Grooms. "The girls wanted it. They were ready to play and expected to win it. It was a lot more dramatic last year, but we're happy to win it any way we can. Foley played hard and gave us a tough game in the semifinals. They played well. I'm proud of the way we hung in there with them."
Daphne improved to 4-1 on the year and will host Fairhope Friday at 6 p.m. "It's nice to see them playing this well at this point in the season with only four or five games under their belt," Grooms said.
In the semifinal Friday, Daphne pulled away from a tie score early in the third quarter with Foley's Lady Lions and built a double-digit lead in the fourth for a 42-29 win. Yelding scored 19 points, 14 of that in the second half and had several steals to stave off the Lady Lions' runs in the third and fourth periods. Foley was led by Misha Cambridge's 10 points, KiKi Youngblood, had eight and Philly Adams four.
In the final, Daphne survived a second quarter spurt by the Raiders to pull away for a 24-12 halftime lead. Yelding scored seven points before having to leave the game with an ankle injury. Senior M.J. Armstrong led the Lady Trojans with 12, Samry and Amanda Patton each had nine and Farley had six. Ricki Alex led the Raiders with 12.
Navarre's Raiders advanced to the finals with a win over Escambia County High, Fla.
