FOLEY, Ala. — Foley Police Chief David Wilson told the mayor and council on Monday that he has met with the owners of the city’s night clubs and bars concerning a proposed ordinance that would stop the sale of alcohol at their establishments at 2 a.m.
“Not everybody is crazy about the proposal,” Wilson told the council, but he said bar owners understand that a public safety issue is at the heart of the proposed ordinance.
“I do plan to go forward to get the ordinance,” Wilson said, noting the “last call for alcohol” ordinance depends on the city council’s approval.
Last month, Wilson responded to an anonymous letter that was circulated among media outlets alleging that he had declared “war on a gay bar,” that being Club Evolution at 8380 S. McKenzie St.
Wilson responded to the letter in a statement that said Foley police were not targeting Club Evolution. Rather, Wilson said he had communicated with all 10 bars in Foley about the proposed ordinance that would prohibit the sale of alcohol at bars and nightclubs from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
He cited the high number of DUIs and serious, even deadly, traffic accidents that have occurred as a result of those DUIs.
