FOLEY — Sponsorships are still being sought for the upcoming Tour de Foley.

According to Tour Co-Chair Rick Blackwell, sponsorships of $200 and above for the Oct. 13 event are still available.

Deemed “The Ride of Your Life,” Le Tour de Foley is a joint effort of the Baldwin County Trailblazers and Foley Lions Club in that provides a challenging opportunity for bicycling enthusiasts.

“There’s a 68-mile, 28-mile and 16-mile route,” said Blackwell in a phone interview, who also serves as Foley Lions Club president, “and there’s a five-mile fun ride.”

Registration for the first three routes is $40, which enables cyclists the opportunity to follow trails from the launch point of Heritage Park in Foley to such Summerdale and back around to Elberta. Blackwell explained that along the way, they’ll encounter rest stops, where refreshments and restrooms will be available. For those looking for something a little less rigorous, registration for the fun ride is $5.

According to Blackwell, proceeds from Le Tour de Foley will be divided between the Baldwin County Trailblazers and the Foley Lions Club.

“The Trailblazers are building a trail from Battleship to Gulf Shores,” he said. “We support Camp Seale Harris, which teaches people how to live with diabetes.

He added that the Lions Club will also use the funds for such projects as scholarships to Troy University , Snook Youth Club, Southeastern Guide Dogs, Mary’s Shelter and providing eyeglasses to those in need through Ecumenical Ministries.

In its third year, Blackwell touts Le Tour de Foley as a success.

“The first year we had 210 participate,” he said, “and we had 189 last year.”

That’s not just from South Baldwin, either.

“We have them come from Tampa, Colorado, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi — all over the South,” Blackwell said.

Advance registration is available at www.tourdefoley.com and www.active.com. However, Blackwell said most don’t use the Internet to register.

“About 60 percent wait until the day of the ride to register,” he said.

Registration on the day of Le Tour de Foley is set for 6 a.m. Oct. 13, with the rides beginning at 8 a.m. and closing at 2 p.m.
