Critical water issues forum: Thursday, March 26, 2 to 5 p.m., Baldwin County Commissioners’  Chamber, 322 Courthouse Square in Bay Minette.

—Roberta Swann, interim director, Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, will provide the overview, and emcee the program.

Research on the three critical water issues presented by:

—Dr. John Valentine, senior scientist, Dauphin Island Sea Lab,                             “The Causeway and the Delta Ecosystem.”

—Pete Tuttle, specialist, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, “Mercury                            Concerns & Other Pollutants in Southern Alabama.”

—Swann, “Stormwater Management.”

—After a brief break, Dr. Chad Christiana, associate professor, environmental engineering, University  of South Alabama, will explore new areas in “Wastewater Management.”

—Bob Fairbank, board of directors, Mississippi Power Company, will bring the message of how Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and the leadership in their state are rebuilding and recuperating from the disastrous consequences of the hurricanes of 2005.

The speakers will then host a roundtable for the audience to ask questions, give input, share ideas, help solve problems, and to clarify points of information.

The Environmental Committee of The League of Women Voters of Baldwin County is sponsoring this series of workshops and educational seminars to provide information and authoritative reports.  This authoritative information to the public and all the county and municipal officials is to further enable their efforts to activate the pending comprehensive, long range environmental plan for Baldwin  County.

Working together to solve the common problems is the first step in the fulfillment of the League’s covenant with the county, organizers said. The covenant is to provide the environmental knowledge to preserve and perpetuate the natural resources and balances necessary to protect, rebuild and enhance the ecosystems to assure the health, quality of life and safety of its people.

“We will not give up on this task. The security of our wonderful environment is threatened by human habitation, exploitation and inventions that circumvent the natural order of life in the varied biospheres.  We must learn to live within the rules providing the necessities for quality of life for all, or risk losing all we love about our part of the south,” Margaret Solberger, chair of the environmental committee, said.  “It is a sacred obligation of the residents, their duty to one another, to be the guardians of our habitat,” she added.

Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery its City Council will provide refreshments at break time.
