Legal Services Alabama launches free online legal guide for residents

Legal Services Alabama has introduced a digital resource aimed at closing the justice gap for residents who struggle to secure legal help.

The statewide tool, Legal Compass AL, offers step-by-step guidance for common civil issues, including benefit disputes and access to public services according to a news release. It officially launched Nov. 3.

The platform, available at www.legalcompassal.org, lets users describe their legal concerns in plain language and receive a customized action plan with recommendations and links to forms and information. Per the release, the site does not offer direct legal advice but instead connects users to vetted legal resources and helps them understand what to do next. It is mobile friendly and designed for people with limited technology access.

"We are thrilled to introduce Legal Compass AL to the community," Guy Lescault, LSA's executive director, said in the release. "This tool represents a significant step forward in providing accessible legal guidance to those who need it most. By leveraging technology, we can offer a resource that is both comprehensive and easy to use, empowering individuals across Alabama."

The tool is meant to support residents facing urgent issues, such as the loss of food assistance or other public benefits, when free legal help is unavailable, said in the release. Leaders said the platform can help users take control of legal emergencies by outlining clear next steps and offering reliable, accessible information in one place.

The project is funded in part by the Legal Services Corporation. National research cited in the release notes more than 90% of low-income households face at least one civil legal problem each year, yet most do not receive legal assistance due to cost or limited availability. Legal aid advocates say tools like Legal Compass AL can help close that gap by offering immediate guidance when a lawyer is not available.

LSA encouraged Alabamians to explore the resource and learn how it can assist with civil legal issues in every county across the state.

Legal Services Alabama is a statewide nonprofit that provides free civil legal aid to low-income clients and works to preserve housing, protect income, ensure safety and expand access to justice.
