Legion to dedicate ramp, volunteers needed

Now here is something in which American Legion Post 199 in Fairhope really want you to be a part. How’s that for good English?

The handicap ramp to the new deck has been completed — and it looks great. Now, they need some volunteers Saturday, Aug. 11, to finish the project with a simple wooden sidewalk from the asphalt parking lot to the ramp entrance.

Then on Friday, Aug. 17, at 5 p.m., they will have the official ramp dedication.

Ted Dyer, 90-year-old founding member of Post 199, WWII veteran and recent amputee, will cut the ribbon and come up the new ramp.

The Legion’s cook, Laban Hoover, will be serving full-bodied, authentic south Louisiana dishes at a modest price and live music will be plentiful.

Help them honor Ted, listen to some great live music, order some Cajun food for eat-in or takeout, and check out the new handicap ramp. It’s a guaranteed fun time.

Speaking of great music, here are the hosts for the Legion Open Guitar Jams on Fridays from 7 p.m. until:

• Aug. 17 — Nothing but the Blues, with the Johnsons and Big Red

• Aug. 24 — Jimmy Lee Hannaford, Big Jim from Austin, Texas — “Back for More”

• Aug. 31 — Roger Fleshman, the big front man for the “Bay Runners”

• Sept. 7 — Randy Baas, the Rock & Roll Blues Daddy

• Sept. 14 and 15 — the Third Annual L.A. Songwriter’s Festival

Sept. 21 — Nothing but the Blues with the Johnsons and Big Blue

Sept. 28 — James Floyd from the “Billy Sunday Band”

American Legion Post 199 is located at 700 S. Mobile St.
