DAPHNE, Alabama — Many visitors from across Baldwin County have seen the current national exhibit at the Daphne Library, “Lincoln, the Constitution and the Civil War,” sponsored by a grant from ALA, NEH and the National Constitution. Around 130 guests have attended each of the first two Lincoln Scholar programs by Dr. Jim Morris and Dr. Donald DeVore in collaboration with the grant display. Each speaker has delivered a wonderfully educational and thought-provoking message.
The third Lincoln Scholar presented by the Daphne Public Library will be Dr. O. Lawrence Burnette Jr. at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30 in the Willow Room at the Daphne Civic Center. His topic will beThe Civil War as a Constitutional Crisis.
Dr. Burnette, a native of North Carolina, grew up in Richmond, Va. and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond. Following Navy service during WW II, he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in history and political science from the University of Virginia.
During a long academic career, Dr. Burnette taught or served as an administrator at the Virginia Military Institute, Stratford College, Birmingham-Southern College and the University of Wisconsin. He currently serves as Visiting Lecturer in American Constitutional Law and Foreign Policy in the Foreign Officer Training Program aboard NAS Pensacola.
Dr. Burnette has published several major works, and continues to research and lecture in his field of interest.
Later in the week, the library will close at noon on Friday, Feb. 3, for staff certification in CPR and First Aid. The Library will return to normal hours of operation on Saturday, Feb. 4.
