Library caters to teens

DAPHNE, Ala. — Red and green paints mixed into holiday poinsettia patterns as teens arched over their china tiles. Meanwhile, upbeat versions of traditional Christmas songs rang out in the Community Room at the Daphne Public Library.

Working together on constructive projects is a familiar scene for teenagers involved with the library’s Teen Advisory Board. The board — which meets the second Tuesday of each month — offers teens in grades six through 12 a say in library activities and a chance to learn about a variety of art forms. The Dec. 11 meeting, for instance, brought presenters Sherry Immel and Barbara James, who taught the ancient art of china painting.

“We try to get young people interested — otherwise this art form will die out,” Immel said. “This teaches a practical form of art; you can paint ornaments, dishes, glasses … you can only put so much on a wall,” she said.

The teens used short brush strokes to fill the poinsettia leaves with color. They then used slightly lighter versions of the same color to make highlights and give the image depth. The small tiles could be used to personalize a kitchen or bathroom or to accentuate a room’s theme.

The Teen Advisory Board — formed last February — has a guest presenter each month to promote interest in a variety of art forms.

In addition to monthly meetings, teens may volunteer time toward service projects. This month, the board will fill folders with literature and word games and distribute them to senior citizens. In November teens made Thanksgiving baskets for senior residents at The Gardens; many baskets included original poetry.

Also, the teens help produce “Kaleidoscope,” a literary magazine with original writings and art work. They also volunteer help with children’s activities and book displays.

“My goal is to give them an opportunity early on to make decisions and see what comes of them,” Louise Youngblood, young-adult librarian, said. “They help decide the magazines and books we purchase for young adults. Also it (the board) gives an opportunity to extend to other people.

“It’s about service, not just the individual. It gives them (teens) more well-rounded tools for college, jobs, the world.”

The Teen Advisory Board will meet at 3:45 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2008 in the Daphne Public Library. Shari Crutchfield, a retired music teacher, will be the guest; she will teach teenagers how to create homemade instruments.
