Library in Silverhill receives book donation

SILVERHILL, Alabama — The Elsie Chandler Children’s wing at the Oscar Johnson Memorial Library in Silverhill is a little richer these days, thanks to a donation from the Libri Foundation’s Books for Children program.

Following the death of longtime Silverhill resident Paul Edwin Utter, memorial donations began pouring into the library, said Director Shirley Stephens.

Utter’s widow, Joan, who retired several years ago from Schmeiding Produce in Loxley, contacted the Schmeiding Foundation and through that organization, the library was able to apply for a grant from the Libri Foundation, an organization based out of Oregon.

“I can’t tell you how excited I was to get the news that we had received the grant,” Stephens said.

She received a 10-page list of books to choose from, and chose many books that were available from popular authors.

“We have so many children come into the library to check out books,” she said, “and we’re excited to be able to build up this part of the library.”

The library recently received 61 books, a total retail value of $1,054.71, at a cost of only $350, Stephens said.
